Steve Nash League Rules

Steve Nash League Rules - Grades 1 - 5

NOTE TO REFEREES: Important basketball rules to remember. These rules have been adapted for younger players in the Nash League. As a referee in this league, it is important to remember that you will be a coach as much as a referee. When you blow your whistle, quickly attempt to indicate why you did so! Coaches and spectators must realize that as a referee you must use judgment when making a call. It can be a very difficult game to officiate. It is most difficult when the skill level is low!

Grades 1 and 2 play special format.

Grade 3 play half gym 3 on 3.

+        Grades 4 and 5 play full gym   4 on 4.

+      There is no full-gym pressure. The defense must pick up their checks at center.

+      Double-teaming and traps are not allowed outside the 3-point line. Inside the 3-point line, help defense is encouraged; this may result in double-teaming and is legal.

+       Inside the 3-point line, coaches must encourage their players to stay with their checks and not sag into the key leaving their checks un-guarded.

+       If illegal defense occurs, the referee will stop the game, have the defense go to the correct spot on the gym, and then restart the game with a sideline throw in.

+   When the offensive team is inbounding the ball in their front gym ( both side line and end line ), including at the start of each new quarter, as well as if the defensive team is pressing, the   defensive team must have a player checking the ball and be within 3' of the offensive player inbounding the ball.

+      There are no screens / picks allowed, except for Grade 5 where screens / picks are allowed.

+      No score clock or score sheet will be used.

+      Fouls will be called but no foul shots will be awarded. Referees will require a player who has fouled to raise his hand. A throw-in will be awarded in all cases.

+       All games will consist of two 25-minute running time halves.

+       Time counts to be aware of:

o   5 seconds to throw the ball in from sideline

o   3 seconds in the key

+       Time violations should not be called too quickly - talk players out of these more subtle violations.

+       Violations which referees will be told to call include:

o   Throw-in violations

o   3 seconds in the key

o   Double dribble

o   Traveling

o   Over and back

+      All players must receive equal play time. Refs will be instructed to permit substitution only at stoppages in the game as per the rules ( substitutions must be made every approximate 4 minutes ). Substitutions will not be made after field goals or during live ball play. Players may not come on to the gym directly from the bench. The referees will ask the players to report to the centerline before the dead ball situation occurs and wait for an opportunity to enter the game. All players must first be waived onto the gym by the referee.

+       No Zone Defense. When playing half gym defense, if a defender is playing sagging man to man, they must be on the same side of the key as their check and have at least one foot outside the key.

+      Each team will be allowed one, 60 second time out per game. The running time clock shall stop during the time out. The referee will be the judge of the length of the time out and will signal  players to the floor to resume play.

+      Games MUST start on time. The scheduled tip-off times are: 5:35, 6:45, and 7:55. Please refer to the game schedule on the website. If the game does not start on time the half will be  shortened. All halves must end on time. End your games on time. Our rental agreement ends at these times too. One referee shall be the official timekeeper.

+       All players are required to wear their official uniform for insurance coverage. Players who do not wear their uniform tops are not covered; neither are coaches, league officials, and referees. Only players with uniforms may play. SHORTS: Players are required to wear black shorts.

+      Players must not wear jewelry or watches or any item prohibited by the rules.

+      Players wearing dirty or marking running shoes will not be allowed to play.

+      The referee is the sole judge of the game.

+      Players must remain in the team area during play. Bench players sitting during the game is ideal. Players in uniform wandering the sidelines are a distraction to those players who are playing and also to the referees.

+       All players, coaches, and spectators are bound by the KMBA code of conduct.

+       This League is about kids having fun!
